Growing up, I was always moving! I played softball for the town's league, golfed, swam, and even earned my black belt in Shotokan karate! During my sophomore year of high school, I decided to start playing lacrosse just to stay active. I ended up falling in love with the sport and continued playing as a goalie at SUNY Geneseo! I was never the best athlete on the field, but I loved being part of a team. For me - sports and fitness is all about having fun and being part of a community. Between my freshman and sophomore year of college, I lost the drive to stay active because I was so focused on work - I gained 35 lbs in a summer, felt sluggish, and my mental health suffered because of it. I started Crossfit during my sophomore year of college when a lacrosse teammate asked me to join her in a WOD at our school weight room. Initially, it was a way to get back in shape, lose some weight and gain some strength, as a complement to my lacrosse training. I slowly started to fall in love with the sport of CrossFit itself because it was pushing me to be a physically AND mentally strong person. When I came home from school in the summer of 2018, I started searching for gyms in the area and found CrossFit Webster. I loved the competitive aspect of it, as well as the AWESOME community at CrossFit Webster, and I kept coming back for more!
Turning Point
After a summer of eating as many tacos and garbage plates as I could, I came back to school feeling sluggish. The first time back in the weight room, I couldn't lift a barbell over my head and my mile was about 5:00 slower than only a few months previous. I felt defeated. A friend asked me to join her in a WOD, just so she'd have someone to struggle along next to her - I said that the workout looked insane but that I was game! I quickly learned to love the fire-breathing, falling to the floor in exhaustion from a workout, and comradery that CrossFit offered! Over time, I became stronger, faster, more confident, happier, and more mentally tough! Once I had met my goals of losing the extra weight and becoming healthier, I kept coming back to the gym because of the lifelong friendships that I had built there.
